TL;DR
Principal Engineer - Controls (Vehicle Control Systems): Developing and validating advanced control strategies for engine, hybrid, electric, autonomous, and off-road vehicle systems with an accent on system requirements, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and production implementation. Focus on modeling control strategies in Matlab/Simulink and related tools, solving complex vehicle controls problems, and guiding engineering projects and entry-level engineers.

Location: Orrville, Ohio, United States; the pay range applies across U.S. locations.

Salary: $91,500–$148,100 per year.

What you will do

  • Lead exploration of technologies, systems, and methods for vehicle control strategies.
  • Develop system requirements and advanced control strategies for engine, hybrid, electric, autonomous, suspension, material handling, and auxiliary systems.
  • Research, develop, verify, validate, test, and implement vehicle control systems in production.
  • Build control strategies in virtual simulation environments and hardware-in-the-loop simulators, then transfer them to vehicle testing and production.
  • Define project resources, estimates, test plans, milestones, and controls schedules.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, suppliers, universities, industry groups, and other project teams while mentoring entry-level engineers.

Requirements

  • Accredited bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least five years of related engineering experience.
  • Ability to perform complex engineering calculations, investigations, planning, reporting, and technical problem solving.
  • Experience with vehicle control systems in automotive or heavy-duty vehicle environments is preferred.
  • Experience with CAN bus and vehicle architecture is preferred.
  • Regular attendance and routine-shift availability are required.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor's degree with eight or more years of experience, a master's degree with five or more years, or a Ph.D. with two or more years of related experience.
  • Experience with MathWorks, dSPACE, Vector tools, or AUTOSAR.
  • Embedded software development experience using C, C++, C#, or Python.
