Controls Engineer (Robotics)

What you will do

• Own safety-critical control code for robotic arms, including joint limits, stop behavior, collision response, and control-loop monitoring.
• Develop the real-time control loop from motion commands through drives, covering timing, stability, and failure modes.
• Structure, test, review, and document safety-critical code within a large evolving codebase.
• Build a hardware-in-the-loop test bench and continuous-integration path using real arms and safety hardware.
• Maintain stopping-time measurements, safety evidence, and tests as the software, hardware, and applications change.
• Document control-system decisions, operating limits, and their rationale.

Requirements

• Experience developing real-time control systems for physical platforms such as robot arms, vehicles, or aircraft.
• Experience working in a mission-critical codebase where software mistakes had physical consequences.
• Understanding of dynamics, torque, inertia, stopping distances, and contact behavior.
• Strong systems software skills with C++ and Python or similar languages, real-time behavior on Linux, and safety-critical code organization.
• Experience building or using hardware-in-the-loop testing with real hardware and software under test.

Nice to have

• Experience with robot or machinery safety standards such as ISO 10218, ISO 13849, or ANSI/RIA R15.06.
• EtherCAT or other fieldbus experience with servo drives.
• Experience with safety-rated controllers or certified functional-safety components.
• Experience in warehouses, manufacturing, or environments where robots and people share space.
