Backend Product Engineer (Fintech)

Location: London, United Kingdom; office attendance required at least 3 days a week, including Mondays

Salary: £53,578–£73,163 depending on experience. Stock options: £34,064–£60,994.

What you will do

• Develop production-grade backend services for payments, core banking, and rewards.
• Build event-driven features with Kafka and integrate internal services and external partners.
• Design and evolve distributed microservices, APIs, and data flows for mobile products.
• Ship features end to end from concept through live deployment with measurable member impact.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve production services, cloud infrastructure, containerized workloads, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with product, design, risk, compliance, operations, partnerships, and engineering colleagues.

Requirements

• Production backend experience building and operating services used by real customers, ideally with Java, Kotlin, or Scala.
• Experience with Kafka or similar event-driven systems and distributed microservices.
• Understanding of functional programming concepts such as immutable data and strongly typed APIs.
• Commitment to automated testing, reliability, observability, and security.
• Ability to take ownership from idea to delivery, work independently in ambiguous situations, and contribute beyond the backend when needed.
• Must complete UK right-to-work and criminal background checks; reference checks are also required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Scala or the Typelevel ecosystem, including Http4s and Cats Effect.
• Experience with AlloyDB or PostgreSQL, GCP, GKE, Docker, React Native, or Next.js.
• Practical use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Codex.
