TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Injection-Molded Plastics) (Robotics/Physical AI): Designing A-surface plastic components and cosmetic enclosures for industrial robots from industrial design intent through production tooling with an accent on polymer selection, Class-A surfacing, GD&T, and injection-molding DFM. Focus on developing manufacturable parts, managing tolerance and appearance standards, and driving tool validation, PPAP, prototyping, and corrective action with suppliers.

Location: Palo Alto, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global is building Physical AI for real-world industrial deployment, starting with factory-floor robotics.

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical design of A-surface plastic components, including covers, skins, shrouds, bezels, and cosmetic enclosures, from industrial design intent through production tooling.
  • Develop Class-A surfaces and translate industrial design surfacing into manufacturable parts while maintaining gap-and-flush, parting line, draft, and aesthetic requirements.
  • Select polymers and manufacturing processes based on appearance, impact and creep behavior, chemical and UV resistance, flammability, and cost.
  • Define GD&T, datum schemes, and tolerance stack-ups across plastic assemblies and interfaces with structures, actuators, and electronics.
  • Drive DFM and DFA for injection molding, insert molding, overmolding, and secondary operations, including gate, ejector, wall, rib, boss, warp, sink, and shutoff design.
  • Work with tool shops, molders, and contract manufacturers through tool kickoff, T0/T1 sampling, tuning, PPAP, mold-flow and tool-design reviews, prototyping, and validation testing.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing injection-molded plastic parts for high-volume consumer, automotive, or robotics products, including taking parts from CAD through production tooling.
  • Deep hands-on knowledge of polymer materials science, including resin families, fillers, additives, anisotropy, moisture sensitivity, shrinkage, warpage, and process-dependent part behavior.
  • Fluency in GD&T based on ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS and tolerance analysis, including worst-case and statistical stack-ups.
  • Experience owning cosmetic A-surface parts and defining appearance standards, textures, gloss levels, color matching, painting, plating, laser etching, and in-mold decoration.
  • Strong surfacing skills in SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, Creo, or a similar CAD system, with the ability to read mold-flow results and tool drawings.
  • Exceptional mechanical intuition, comfort with ambiguity, and a hands-on approach to solving complex robotics hardware problems.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hands-on work with the physical world and real-world industrial robotics.
  • Ownership of difficult mechanical design and manufacturing problems across the product lifecycle.
  • Fast-paced environment that values curiosity and understanding how the complete system works.
  • On-site collaboration in Palo Alto.
