Environmental Field Chemist I (Hazardous Waste)

Location: Tacoma, WA, USA; regular indoor and outdoor work at customer sites, including travel to customer locations

Salary: $29.15–$40.10 per hour, depending on the hiring locality

What you will do

• Collect, characterize, package, and prepare customer waste for final disposal.
• Assist with safe transportation of waste in accordance with federal regulations.
• Prepare packing lists, waste labels, shipping documents, and other customer paperwork.
• Provide onsite support for inspections, waste collection, chemical dispensing, inventory management, housekeeping, and outbound waste shipments.
• Identify suspected waste contents through sampling procedures, categorization tests, and field screens.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, environmental science, or equivalent experience.
• Basic knowledge of chemistry principles and practices.
• Understanding of federal and state environmental and transportation regulations; DOT and RCRA experience is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and an MVR meeting company policy standards.
• Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with an 8-hour refresher, or ability to complete the course after hire.
• Ability to pass a respirator fit test and regularly lift or move objects weighing 40 pounds or more.

Nice to have

• Experience with waste sampling, waste characterizations, and waste profiles.
• Ability to use computer technology for communication, data gathering, and reporting.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer interaction skills.
