TL;DR
Laboratory Health & Safety Lead/Environmental Chemist (EHS and Environmental Chemistry): Implementing laboratory health and safety programs while performing EPA-method environmental chemistry analyses of soil, water, air, waste, and tissue samples with an accent on regulatory compliance, hazardous materials management, and analytical instrumentation. Focus on conducting inspections and exposure assessments, investigating incidents, developing corrective actions, and operating ICP and GC-based systems in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.

Location: Onsite in Corvallis, Oregon, United States, with occasional travel to EPA Region 9 locations, including Hayward, California. U.S. citizenship is required, and the successful candidate must pass an EPA background check to access federal property.

Salary: $73,738–$125,354 per year for full-time employment.

What you will do

  • Administer and maintain environmental health and safety programs, policies, SOPs, and chemical hygiene plans.
  • Conduct laboratory inspections, safety audits, exposure assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses; identify root causes and develop corrective actions.
  • Support regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, RCRA, facility permits, and Oregon and California requirements.
  • Manage hazardous, universal, and biological waste handling, storage, disposal, and documentation.
  • Perform environmental chemistry analyses using EPA-approved methods and laboratory instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences, environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of laboratory experience, including 2 years in laboratory safety, regulatory implementation, laboratory operations, hazardous waste management, and chemical safety.
  • At least 3 years of environmental laboratory experience using EPA-approved methodologies and instrumentation in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.
  • Experience with environmental analysis or instrumentation such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, GC-FID, or GC/MS.
  • Experience with data management and report preparation.
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass an EPA background check are required.

Nice to have

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • RCRA training.
  • Experience with Clinysis (Promium) Element LIMS, Ideagen Quality Management System, integrated LIMS, or paperless laboratories.
