Senior Specialist, Mechanical Engineer (Precision Mechanisms)

Location: On-site in Palm Bay, Florida, or Carlsbad, California. The role includes direct laboratory, prototype, integration, and hardware-testing activities. Security clearance requirements limit eligibility to U.S. citizens.

Salary range: $102,000–$189,000 annually for the Virginia salary band; final compensation varies by experience and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design, analysis, prototype integration, and qualification testing for precision mechanisms and electro-mechanical hardware.
• Develop 3D models, engineering drawings, technical data packages, and assembly documentation.
• Evaluate materials and design trades while optimizing performance, size, weight, power, manufacturability, and reliability.
• Plan and execute component- and system-level tests, analyze results, and implement design improvements.
• Present designs and test results in peer reviews, preliminary design reviews, critical design reviews, and customer reviews.
• Partner with manufacturing, quality, configuration management, suppliers, technicians, and test teams to transition designs into production and support field demonstrations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 6 years of relevant experience, or a graduate degree and at least 4 years of related experience.
• Applicants without a degree must have at least 10 years of relevant experience.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret/SCI clearance and a favorable polygraph is required.
• Experience with mechanical design, development, integration, and testing of complex hardware.
• Experience with 3D mechanical CAD, engineering drawings, and tolerance analysis/GD&T.
• Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens.

Nice to have

• Experience designing precision mechanisms, mechatronic systems, or modules and electronics packaging under thermal and structural loading constraints.
• Proficiency with Creo and knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
• Experience with additive manufacturing, part optimization, and design for manufacture and assembly.
• Experience with actuators, custom gear trains, electro-optical systems, materials testing, or manufacturing processes.
• Active Top Secret or Top Secret/SCI clearance and a favorable polygraph.
