TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer (Life Sciences): Designing and developing analytical instruments, accessories, prototypes, manufacturing fixtures, and commercial products with an accent on mechanism design, tolerance analysis, manufacturability, and reliability. Location: San Jose, California, United States; onsite role

Salary: $132,400–$217,600 per year

What you will do

  • Design and develop analytical instruments, accessories, mechanisms, durable hardware, and consumables.
  • Lead work across concept feasibility, new product development, new product introduction, manufacturing and inspection fixtures, and field product support.
  • Create 3D models, 2D drawings, bills of materials, engineering documentation, protocols, and reports using SolidWorks and PDM.
  • Iterate prototypes and ensure feasibility, reliability, manufacturability, regulatory compliance, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support manufacturing equipment and process development, design transfer, vendor relationships, design reviews, and system-level problem solving.
  • Present technical designs, collaborate with scientists and engineers, and contribute innovative solutions to the company’s intellectual property portfolio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5–7 years of industry experience, or a master’s degree with 3–5 years of experience.
  • Experience in life sciences, diagnostics, medical devices, or a related field, including successful development of prototype and commercial product designs.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fatigue, FEA, and GD&T.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks and PDM, including models, assemblies, detailed drawings, and ASME standards.
  • Experience with tolerance stack analysis, manufacturing processes, design for manufacturability, motors, transmissions, and sensors.
  • Must have US work authorization that does not now or in the future require visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Experience in life sciences instrumentation, capillary or microfluidic design, opto-mechanical instruments, optics and detection, fluidics, automation, or manufacturing and inspection equipment.
