TL;DR
API Architect (Python/AWS): Designing, building, and operating scalable APIs, microservices, backend infrastructure, and streaming data pipelines with an accent on External Data API architecture, schema governance, and real-time data systems. Focus on evolving API platforms, documenting architectural decisions, improving developer workflows, introducing AI-assisted engineering practices, and mentoring engineers while maintaining high availability.
Location: Remote in the United States or Canada

What you will do
- Design, build, operate, and evolve scalable RESTful APIs, microservices, and backend platform infrastructure using Python and AWS.
- Own the External Data API as the technical bridge between internal data systems and customers.
- Establish data governance patterns for schemas, versioning, documentation, compatibility, registries, and data dictionaries.
- Architect streaming data pipelines and support the transition from batch processing to real-time architectures.
- Create architecture decision records, API specifications, system documentation, and implementation guidance for internal APIs.
- Improve CI/CD and developer workflows, introduce AI-assisted engineering practices, collaborate across teams, mentor engineers, and participate in on-call rotations.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional experience in software, backend, or platform engineering.
- Deep experience designing, operating, and scaling RESTful APIs, web services, distributed backend systems, and API gateways such as Kong Hybrid, Apigee, or Gravitee.
- Strong Python programming skills and experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka, AWS Kinesis, or Spark Streaming.
- Solid AWS cloud infrastructure knowledge and familiarity with containerization and deployment tools such as Kubernetes and Helm.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, architectural documentation, ADRs, and API specifications.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on senior-level role and support high-availability systems.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI-assisted and agentic development workflows, coding agents, MCP, AI pair programming, and LLM-powered research.
- Advanced Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform.
- Experience with ETL/ELT, warehouses, lakehouses, event-driven systems, data governance, and data quality.
- Experience with EHR systems, HL7, FHIR, and HIPAA-related data privacy requirements.
- Experience working in distributed, async-first engineering teams and startup environments.
