TL;DR
Engineering Technician (CNC Machining) (Precision Machining and Research Instrumentation): Designing, fabricating, assembling, maintaining, and repairing specialized mechanical components and research equipment for physics teaching and research with an accent on advanced conventional and CNC machining, CAD/CAM workflows, and precision fabrication. Focus on solving complex design problems independently, maintaining scientific instrumentation, and training students in safe machine shop practices.

Location: hirify.global Vancouver Campus, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; onsite

Salary: $7,309.00–$7,798.00 CAD monthly

hirify.global is a university supporting teaching and research through its Department of Physics and Astronomy and Technical Services units.

What you will do

  • Perform advanced conventional and CNC machining, welding, woodworking, and fabrication of precision parts and devices.
  • Design, modify, develop, integrate, and assemble specialized research equipment, apparatus, and mechanical components.
  • Use CAD and CAM software, including SolidWorks and MasterCAM, to support CNC manufacturing and technical documentation.
  • Repair, upgrade, and maintain instruments, machines, and systems involving mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, vacuum, pressurized gas, and cryogenic-related work.
  • Oversee student machine shop activities, provide technical guidance, and deliver machine shop practices training.
  • Track project time and expenses, support stores and purchasing duties, and maintain safe and orderly work areas.

Requirements

  • Technical college or institute graduation, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship, with at least five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with advanced and CNC machining using milling machines and lathes.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering specifications and technical drawing standards.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and resolve complex design and operational problems.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, hazardous-material handling, WHMIS, and relevant Government/WCB requirements.
  • Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives and developing equity, diversity, and inclusion awareness and skills.

Nice to have

  • Red Seal certification in a relevant machining trade or active progress toward certification.
  • Training in advanced machining, CNC machining, fabrication, CAM, instrument making, tool and die making, precision mechanics, or a related trade.
  • Experience with specialized or custom equipment, scientific or research work, waterjet cutting, sheet metal, woodwork, or basic wiring.
  • University degree, strong communication skills, and experience providing technical guidance in a teaching capacity.

  • Work independently under the overall direction of the Technical Services Director.
