Thermodynamics Senior Research Investigator

Location: Newark, Delaware, United States; full-time, onsite at the Discovery Hub global R&D center.

Salary: $110,544–$172,725 annually; annual bonus target: 11%.

What you will do

• Generate thermophysical property data and develop predictive thermodynamic models for the Thermal & Specialized Solutions business.
• Design, operate, improve, troubleshoot, and upgrade laboratory systems for measuring phase equilibria and transport properties.
• Plan experiments, analyze data, perform parameter estimation and regression, validate models, and communicate technical conclusions.
• Develop thermodynamic and chemical process model property packages for Aspen Plus and other simulation software.
• Support research, plant operations, capital projects, sustainability, technical support, and customer-facing technical activities.
• Provide technical data for patents and support applications in automotive thermal management, HVAC, refrigeration, data-center cooling, and thermal insulation.

Requirements

• PhD with at least 3 years of experience, or MS with at least 8 years of relevant experience, in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with high-accuracy experimental setups, preferably for thermophysical properties.
• Experience with transport-property assignment, parameter regression, model calibration, model validation, and data analysis.
• Expertise in at least one programming language: Python, FORTRAN, C++, or Java.
• Strong written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects.
• Ability to work onsite in Newark, Delaware, United States.

Nice to have

• Thermodynamics specialization, especially nonelectrolyte systems, activity coefficient models, and equations of state.
• Experience commissioning and calibrating experimental apparatus, uncertainty assessment, and thermodynamics packages such as Aspen Plus, MATLAB, REFPROP, or related tools.
• Experience with machine-learning, QSPR, QSAR, first-principles, or multiscale modeling.
• Knowledge of thermal systems, fluorochemical science, refrigeration, air conditioning, or component- and system-level thermal management.
