R&D Engineer II (Membrane Technology)

Location: Bedford, Massachusetts, United States; based at the Bedford facility

Salary: $74,500–$102,000 per year, with actual pay dependent on skills and experience.

What you will do

• Develop surface chemistry modifications, formulations, and chemical processes for polymeric membranes used in liquid filtration and purification.
• Design and execute laboratory experiments using DOE, statistical analysis, modeling, and AI tools.
• Characterize membranes using flow time, bubble point, FTIR, UV-Vis, ion exchange capacity, and other analytical techniques.
• Interpret ICP-MS, LC-MS, GC-MS, and other metrology data to evaluate membrane performance and develop test methods.
• Optimize roll-to-roll manufacturing processes and support pilot-scale trials, scale-up, and commercialization.
• Collaborate with application, product development, operations, quality, manufacturing, and EHS teams; communicate technical findings through reports and presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in product development, process development, manufacturing engineering, materials development, or applied research.
• Experience designing laboratory experiments, collecting and interpreting data, and documenting results.
• Ability to work effectively in laboratory and manufacturing environments and manage multiple priorities independently.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Must follow EHS requirements and safe laboratory practices; immigration sponsorship is not available for this role.

Nice to have

• Experience with membrane technologies, surface modification, and membrane characterization.
• Knowledge of DOE, statistical analysis, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and risk assessment.
• Experience with process development, manufacturing scale-up, technology commercialization, Lean, or Six Sigma.
• Familiarity with quality systems, ISO requirements, SOP development, audits, and laboratory operations.
