TL;DR
Instructional Designer, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Program (Utility Engineering Training): Designing technical, systems, and soft-skills curricula for transmission and substation engineering with an accent on task analysis, instructional materials, assessments, and safety tools. Focus on developing technical documentation, facilitating expert validation sessions, and measuring training effectiveness across PG&E engineering programs.

Location: Hybrid; in-office attendance at the hiring leader’s discretion in California locations, with approximately 10% travel within PG&E’s service territory.

Salary: $76,000–$114,000 per year across California locations; Bay Area range: $80,000–$120,000 per year. Eligible for discretionary incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Research, design, and develop technical, systems, and soft-skills curricula for the Engineer-in-Training program.
  • Define learning objectives, course structures, training content, assessments, hands-on activities, and facilitator materials.
  • Conduct needs analyses and detailed task analyses based on target audiences, business processes, and systems.
  • Create presentations, guides, job aids, scenarios, graphics, interactions, user manuals, and technical procedure documents.
  • Collaborate with engineering stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop, review, validate, and improve learning solutions.
  • Facilitate virtual and in-person sessions and define metrics for measuring training effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, liberal arts, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least three years of experience in instructional design, communications, teaching, training, change management, or graphic design.
  • Experience with adult learning theory, instructional design methods, and advanced task analysis.
  • Technical writing experience and proficiency in PowerPoint and Word.
  • Ability to manage multiple development efforts, deadlines, stakeholder feedback, and project risks.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and ability to incorporate safety requirements into training.

Nice to have

  • Degree in engineering, computer science, learning design, or instructional technology.
  • Experience developing instructor-led, eLearning, or virtual courseware for transmission, substation engineering, or the utility industry.
  • At least three years of experience with Questionmark and Author-it.
  • Experience developing technical training and working with engineering subject matter experts.
