Counsel (AI/Data Privacy)

Location: Remote. A JD and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction are required.

What you will do

• Draft, redline, negotiate, and close data licensing agreements, SOWs, NDAs, BAAs, DPAs, vendor agreements, and novel commercial arrangements.
• Advise business, partnerships, healthcare, product, and engineering teams on HIPAA, de-identification, consent, provenance, GDPR/CCPA, and emerging AI regulation.
• Triage and manage a high-volume legal queue with dozens of active matters, prioritizing deep work, fast answers, and outside-counsel support.
• Work directly with technical teams and counterparties, translating legal risk into clear, practical guidance.
• Manage specialist outside counsel and keep matters focused, timely, and cost-effective.
• Build legal infrastructure, including templates, playbooks, intake processes, and AI-assisted workflows.

Requirements

• JD and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 6+ years of relevant legal experience with significant depth in technology transactions and privacy.
• Experience negotiating and closing complex technology or data transactions end-to-end, ideally including data licensing.
• Hands-on ownership of privacy programs involving HIPAA, de-identification, GDPR/CCPA, DPAs, and BAAs.
• Experience managing high-volume legal work with strong judgment, speed, and prioritization.
• Comfort with ambiguity, modern collaboration tools, AI systems, and practical communication with high EQ.

Nice to have

• In-house experience at a technology company working with AI, training data, health data, or novel legal risk.
• Familiarity with Expert Determination, Safe Harbor, and the healthcare data ecosystem.
• Experience as an early or solo in-house lawyer building intake, templates, and outside-counsel relationships.

Hiring process

• First 30 days focus on building relationships, learning legal intake and tooling, and handling initial NDAs, SOW redlines, and privacy questions with CLO review.
• By 60 days, the role is expected to co-own the commercial queue, lead data-license negotiations, and own a privacy workstream.
• By 90 days, the role is expected to co-own commercial and privacy matters and deliver improvements to legal infrastructure.
