Senior Firmware Engineer (IoT)

Location: Hybrid, with a strong preference for candidates based in or near Chicago, IL or Urbana, IL. Primarily remote work may be possible for the right candidate if they have their own electronics bench and equipment.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and ship firmware for connected ovens across the Electric Imp/Squirrel legacy fleet and the new ESP32-based platform.
• Own bug fixes, feature development, performance improvements, lab testing, staged fleet rollouts, and production monitoring.
• Write, monitor, and maintain automated firmware test pipelines and execute bench and fleet-subset test plans.
• Use AI-assisted development tools for code generation, debugging, test scaffolding, log analysis, and documentation.
• Collaborate with thermal, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, operations, and backend partners to resolve issues across firmware, hardware, cloud, and factory systems.
• Improve code review standards, test infrastructure, release processes, documentation, and responsible AI-tool adoption.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional firmware or embedded software engineering experience, including shipping firmware to production fleets of internet-connected devices.
• Strong C/C++ and embedded systems fundamentals, including RTOS, memory, timing, interrupts, and real-time constraints.
• Experience with Python and Bash for build tooling and test automation.
• Experience with embedded interfaces and protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, BLE, Wi-Fi, TLS, MQTT, and HTTPS.
• Experience with CI/CD and automated test workflows, preferably GitHub Actions and workflows, plus hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools.
• Degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or equivalent experience, along with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Nice to have

• Electric Imp OS and Squirrel experience, or ESP32, ESP-IDF, and FreeRTOS experience.
• AWS IoT Core, device shadows, OTA pipelines, and telemetry ingestion experience.
• Experience with TypeScript, React, Flask, Go, SQL, manufacturing firmware tooling, or connected consumer products.
• Hardware-adjacent experience with schematics, PCB layouts, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, alternate components, or switch-mode power supplies.
