Assistant Resident Engineer, ANS (Bridge and Roadway Construction)

What you will do

• Support the Resident Engineer with field oversight, inspections, quality assurance, and contract administration across bridge and roadway construction projects.
• Verify contractor work against approved plans, specifications, and special provisions, and coordinate resolution of field issues with contractors, utilities, public agencies, and construction management consultants.
• Review contractor submittals, RFI responses, progress schedules, and project documentation.
• Oversee construction materials testing and sampling, and prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
• Support change order preparation and negotiation, pay estimates, correspondence, and claims documentation.
• Perform or support calculations for grade, alignment, quantities, falsework, shoring, structural components, bridge deck placement, and roadway tie-ins.

Requirements

• Engineer In Training (EIT) certification is required; California Professional Engineer licensure is preferred.
• At least eight years of roadway or highway construction inspection and field engineering experience on major public works projects.
• Experience on at least one Caltrans-administered or federally funded highway project.
• At least three years of experience in structural mechanics, stress analysis, or bridge construction inspection.
• Knowledge of bridge construction, contractor compliance, quality assurance, and construction documentation.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of concrete and steel bridge materials, falsework, and shoring systems.
• Experience as an Assistant or Resident Engineer on bridge or river crossing projects.
• Experience with Caltrans documentation standards, E-builder/PMCS systems, and Microsoft Office.
• Experience leading field inspection staff and making technically sound field decisions.
• Familiarity with environmental compliance, stormwater management, tolling, smart corridor, or ITS-equipped roadway projects.
