TL;DR
Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer (Quantum Computing): Leading the design and integration of complex opto-mechanical systems, ultra-high vacuum chambers, and precision optical assemblies with an accent on stability, thermal performance, alignment integrity, and scalable manufacturing. Focus on advanced tolerance analysis, DFMA, precision mechanisms, hands-on assembly and integration, and technical leadership across the quantum computing hardware lifecycle.

Location: Boulder, CO, United States; on-site

Base salary: $170,000–$200,000 per year, plus annual bonus and equity.

What you will do

  • Lead the design and specification of complex opto-mechanical systems, ultra-high vacuum chambers, and mechanical infrastructure from component to system level.
  • Architect optical assemblies with physicists and subject matter experts, ensuring precision stability, thermal performance, and alignment integrity.
  • Establish design standards, lead critical design reviews, perform tolerance analysis, and drive Design for Manufacturing and Assembly.
  • Oversee hands-on assembly, alignment, testing, and integration of critical opto-mechanical designs.
  • Mentor engineers, create training documentation, contribute to technical roadmaps, and support patents, grant proposals, and technical documentation.
  • Manage external vendors, troubleshoot complex issues across the product lifecycle, and support work at customer facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; an advanced degree is a plus.
  • 10+ years of opto-mechanical design experience and 8+ years of hands-on optics assembly experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Expertise in complex opto-mechanical systems, precision mechanisms, kinematic systems, and first-order optics and aberration theory.
  • Mastery of SolidWorks, PDM, or equivalent design and data management software, with strong FEA and first-order analysis skills.
  • Experience with adhesives in optical environments, DFMA, tolerancing, ASME Y14.5M drawings, and ISO 10110.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, mentor others, and lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
