What you will do
- Perform venipuncture and other laboratory specimen collections according to age-related standards and department protocols.
- Process, label, centrifuge, aliquot, freeze, package, and transport specimens while maintaining sample stability and integrity.
- Review physician orders, enter laboratory tests into multiple systems, and verify test result receipt.
- Provide patient communication and post-phlebotomy care while applying patient-safety practices.
- Monitor equipment, refrigerator temperatures, quality records, supplies, and biohazard waste procedures.
- Communicate specimen collection issues and outstanding orders with laboratory and physician staff.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution, or at least one year of healthcare phlebotomy experience, or CMA certification.
- Ability to work onsite in Chicago, Illinois during the day shift.
- Ability to provide accurate patient information retrieval, order entry, laboratory reception, and clerical support.
- Ability to follow safety, regulatory, quality-control, and biohazard-waste procedures.
Nice to have
- Experience drawing blood from a broad range of patient types.
- Experience processing and transferring specimens and operating a centrifuge.
- Familiarity with medical electronic medical record systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
