Manufacturing Industrial Optimization Engineer II (Automotive)

Location: Detroit, MI, United States; onsite. Candidates must be able to work in or relocate to Detroit. Relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $86,000–$110,000 USD per year, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

• Lead continuous improvement initiatives across transmission assembly manufacturing operations, improving safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost performance.
• Analyze and optimize production workflows, material movement, ergonomics, equipment utilization, facility layouts, and labor efficiency.
• Apply Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S, and Value Stream Mapping to reduce waste and improve operational performance.
• Identify bottlenecks and implement sustainable solutions to increase throughput, capacity, and resource utilization.
• Use manufacturing data and KPIs to drive improvements and support business objectives.
• Develop standard work, visual management systems, and process controls while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 2–4 years of relevant experience in manufacturing, industrial engineering, process improvement, or operations optimization.
• Experience with 8D, 5 Whys, and Root Cause Analysis.
• At least one year of experience analyzing production workflows, material flow and handling, facility layout, workstation design, ergonomics, equipment utilization, and labor efficiency.
• At least one year of exposure to time studies, capacity analysis, line balancing, bottleneck analysis, and throughput improvement projects.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and manufacturing data analysis tools.

Nice to have

• Experience in automotive, heavy manufacturing, aerospace, or industrial production environments.
• Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and continuous improvement methodologies.
