Director, Software Engineering (Payments)

Location: Foster City, California, United States; hybrid position with at least 3 days per week in the office. The role requires 5–10% travel and is performed in an office setting.

Salary: $219,100–$350,800 USD per year, with potential bonus, equity, and applicable sales incentive payments.

What you will do

• Lead the design, implementation, deployment, and operation of secure, reliable, scalable payment acceptance products and platforms.
• Provide hands-on technical direction across architecture, coding, design reviews, troubleshooting, production readiness, and critical delivery decisions.
• Define technical strategy for payment processing, search, indexing, analytics, enrichment, dashboards, and high-throughput data processing.
• Drive resilient event-driven architectures covering event correlation, transaction matching, retries, dead-letter queues, replay, idempotency, and exactly-once processing considerations.
• Apply AI/ML, Generative AI, automation, and intelligent engineering practices to improve software delivery, search relevance, analytics, and developer productivity.
• Lead and mentor engineers and engineering leaders while communicating strategy, risks, tradeoffs, and delivery progress to executives and cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 13+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience leading software engineering teams, including people management, coaching, performance development, hiring, and delivery accountability.
• Deep experience building and operating mission-critical distributed systems requiring high availability, scalability, resiliency, security, and low latency.
• Hands-on experience with Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, Vert.x, REST, Kafka, Hazelcast, Git, Maven, CI/CD pipelines, and test automation.
• Experience with cloud platforms, Kubernetes, containerized deployments, DevOps, event-driven architecture, streaming, and high-throughput transaction or data processing.
• Experience with payments or financial services, PCI-DSS, SOX, security, compliance, risk, controls, and operational readiness is required or strongly preferred.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree or PhD with the corresponding professional experience.
• Production experience implementing or governing AI/ML, Generative AI, or agentic AI capabilities.
• Experience leading geographically distributed, multidisciplinary engineering teams and influencing strategy across teams without formal reporting authority.
