Senior Backend Engineer (AI): Building internal developer tooling and agentic workflows that evaluate platform readiness across GitLab's four deployment platforms with an accent on backend architecture, schema-driven requirements, and developer-tool integrations. Focus on automating platform assessments, measuring AI workflow accuracy, surfacing validation gaps, and mentoring engineers on human-AI collaboration.

What you will do
- Design, implement, and evolve agentic workflows and the Requirements Agent on the Duo Agent Platform.
- Develop schemas, validation tooling, and CI systems for machine-readable platform requirements across four deployment platforms.
- Build integrations with issues, merge requests, design documents, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Work with Infrastructure, Security, and Data teams to convert domain expertise into structured requirements, skills, and validation logic.
- Design feedback, observability, and evaluation systems that identify assessment errors, content drift, cost, and failure modes.
- Mentor engineers and document architectural decisions, workflow standards, evaluation methods, and human-AI collaboration principles.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in backend, platform, or developer-facing tooling.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node, Python, or Golang.
- Experience shipping developer-facing tools used primarily by engineers.
- Understanding of issues, epics, merge requests, CI/CD, and code review as artifacts for automation.
- Experience working across multiple platform teams and with structured content systems, schemas, or validation tooling.
- Must be eligible to work remotely from Canada or the United States.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI or agentic systems such as DAP, ADK, LangGraph, or similar platforms.
- Experience integrating LLM APIs and evaluating cost, latency, quality, and failure modes.
- Developer experience, platform engineering, governance, or open source contribution background.
- PostgreSQL or other relational database experience at scale.
- Production agentic workflows, schema-driven content systems, AI observability, or monitoring experience.
