Staff Software Engineer, Invoicing and Billing (Ruby/Rails)

Location: San Francisco, CA — hybrid, with office attendance approximately 2–3 days per week. Travel to a hirify.global office is required for onboarding. Approved remote work is available only from U.S. locations, with offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City.

Salary: $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and most remote locations; $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York. Stock equity is additional.

What you will do

• Design, build, and test the core billing platform, including usage jobs, subscriptions, orders, invoice generation, payments, reporting, and accounting integrations.
• Shape architecture and own platform performance, reliability, and maintenance across the full product lifecycle.
• Build self-service internal features and APIs that support new products and billing models.
• Scale large Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React applications and high-throughput transactional systems.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design to prototype, iterate, and launch customer-facing solutions.
• Mentor engineers and lead multi-quarter projects addressing complex technical problems.

Requirements

• Typically 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience building large-scale, high-throughput distributed systems and scalable, efficient platforms.
• Experience in invoicing, commerce, payment processing, or revenue recognition.
• Experience with large-scale refactoring, performance and reliability improvements, and end-to-end platform ownership.
• Experience in or interest in Ruby on Rails, plus the ability to communicate with engineering teams and business stakeholders.
• Experience using AI tools or systems and experimenting with emerging AI frameworks is required.
