Principal Software Engineer (IBM z/OS Connectivity)

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software for connectivity and integration with IBM z/OS mainframe environments.
• Build integrations with JES2/JES3, TSO, SMF, USS, and native C/JNI components.
• Extend identity and credential management with per-user authorization and secure cryptographic capabilities.
• Develop resilient systems involving custom wire protocols, concurrency, long-running daemon processes, and native z/OS platform integration.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across mainframe, Unix, and Java environments while improving reliability, performance, security, and scalability.
• Partner with product managers, architects, and engineers on architecture, design reviews, testing, release planning, documentation, and validation on live LPARs.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience and strong Java 8+ skills.
• Hands-on IBM z/OS integration experience with JES2/JES3, TSO, RACF/ACF2/Top Secret, SMF, and USS.
• Strong working proficiency in C and experience with low-level network protocols, socket programming, binary framing, character encoding, and TLS/keyring security.
• Experience implementing cryptographic primitives with standard libraries such as Java JCE, including key exchange and symmetric cipher modes.
• Strong concurrency and multithreading skills, plus experience with Git, CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Ability to validate AI-generated recommendations against authoritative IBM documentation and recognize when specialized tasks require independent technical judgment.

Nice to have

• IBM Semeru or z/OS Java experience, workload automation experience, or mainframe migration and modernization experience.
• Sysplex/Parallel Sysplex clustering, z/OSMF REST APIs, or JCL library tooling experience.
• z/OS Assembler experience for future authorized-code or SMF-exit work.
