Principal Software Engineer - IBM i (AS/400) Connectivity

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain native software for IBM i (AS/400) connectivity and integration.
• Build job submission and monitoring, spool file and message/data queue handling, and CL/RPG program invocation capabilities.
• Integrate IBM i functionality with hirify.global RunMyJobs through host-server APIs and IBM Toolbox for Java.
• Implement IBM i user-profile authorization and extend identity and credential management.
• Improve reliability, performance, security, and scalability while troubleshooting issues across IBM i, Unix, and Java.
• Collaborate on architecture, design reviews, testing, releases, documentation, and customer-driven technical solutions.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience and strong Java 8+ skills.
• Hands-on IBM i integration experience with CL, native job/spool/queue APIs, IBM Toolbox for Java (JTOpen/jt400), and DB2 for i.
• Working proficiency in C, including ILE C on IBM i.
• Experience with TCP/IP host-server or RPC-style APIs, connection lifecycle management, error handling, concurrency, and multithreading.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and production AI tools, with the judgment to verify specialized AI-generated recommendations.
• Ability to work from authoritative IBM i technical references and maintain an architectural focus across platform integrations.

Nice to have

• Experience with workload automation products such as Tidal, CA-7, Control-M, Stonebranch, BMC, or RunMyJobs.
• IBM i clustering or high-availability experience.
• Advanced IBM i security knowledge, including authorization lists and adopted authority.
• RPG/COBOL, IBM i modernization, or mainframe and midrange migration experience.
