Senior Software Engineer - Marketplace Foundation

Location: San Mateo, California, United States; office-based roles require onsite presence Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence Monday and Friday.

Salary: $196,750–$243,290 USD annual base pay, plus equity eligibility and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, architect, implement, and operate scalable, reliable, and fault-tolerant distributed systems for the avatar marketplace.
• Build microservices, message queuing systems, distributed databases, and cloud-based solutions supporting virtual item supply and demand.
• Develop backend services for creators and users, including marketplace capabilities such as Bundles, Limiteds, and price optimization.
• Optimize performance, latency, throughput, scalability, and production fault tolerance across critical marketplace systems.
• Troubleshoot complex distributed-system issues and improve the efficiency and resolution of production support incidents.
• Collaborate with product managers, research scientists, and engineering teams while mentoring engineers and contributing to architecture and coding standards.

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional software development experience with significant distributed-systems experience.
• Strong knowledge of CAP theorem, consistency models, concurrency control, fault tolerance, and consensus algorithms including Paxos, Raft, and PBFT.
• Proficiency in one or more of C#, Go, Rust, Java, C++, or Python.
• Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Helm.
• Experience with Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, MongoDB, and monitoring or observability tools such as Grafana, Datadog, Prometheus, or ELK.
• Experience defining technical vision, providing technical leadership, and solving complex engineering problems.
