Substation Physical Engineer (Power Systems)

What you will do

• Lead and oversee physical design drawings for distribution substations from 12kV to 69kV, with potential involvement in transmission projects above 69kV.
• Prepare substation one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, electrical details, grounding, conduit, control cubicle, cable tray, lighting, and lightning protection designs.
• Lead AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning shielding studies, and develop bills of materials based on design criteria.
• Coordinate with protection and controls, civil and structural engineering, and drafting disciplines to deliver complete design packages.
• Support client meetings, technical discussions, project planning, site visits, constructability reviews, and vendor information integration.
• Apply utility standards and industry codes, ensure QA/QC compliance, and mentor junior engineers and designers.

Requirements

• Must be located in the United States for this remote role.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably electrical engineering with a power focus.
• At least 2 years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
• Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and MicroStation or similar design tools.
• Familiarity with substation design standards and practices, including IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility specifications.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, communicate effectively, and mentor junior staff.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license or the ability to obtain one within 6 months.
• Experience leading 3D substation projects modeled with Autodesk Inventor.
• Familiarity with CDEGS grounding studies and Agi32 illumination software.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
