Technical Editor (Transportation)

Salary: $61,232–$104,094 per year

What you will do

• Edit technical brochures, standard operating procedures, research reports, technical summaries, and other technical documents.
• Distill complex data into accurate, clear, professional content and supporting graphics.
• Perform substantive editing, line editing, copy editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and plain-language editing.
• Improve content structure, grammar, accuracy, readability, consistency, references, and attribution.
• Apply client, government, agency, and editorial standards, including copyright requirements.
• Collaborate with clients, subject matter experts, authors, engineers, and project staff throughout the publication lifecycle.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, or a related scientific or technical field.
• 3–10 years of professional experience in technical writing, documentation, editing, proofreading, copy editing, or substantive editing.
• 3–10 years of experience reviewing complex technical material for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness.
• Experience with GPO and government or agency editorial standards.
• Ability to obtain a government security clearance if required by contract.
• Testing is part of the interview process.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.
• Experience with reference checking, copyright compliance, publication quality assurance, and quality control.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, PDF and document-production tools, accessibility, and online publishing workflows.
• Experience editing engineering, research, scientific, transportation, highway, or surface transportation documentation.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary technical teams and managing documents from initial drafts through publication.
