Histotechnologist

Location: Onsite at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, United States; other listed locations include Shelton, Connecticut, and Baltimore, Maryland. Work schedule: 1st shift, per diem.

Pay range: $32.35–$46.50 per hour.

What you will do

• Process human tissue and body fluid specimens for microscopic examination.
• Embed surgical tissue, section samples with a microtome, and mount sections on microscope slides.
• Perform routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining procedures.
• Prepare stains and reagents and operate manual and automated laboratory instruments.
• Maintain equipment, record instrument logs, and perform preventive maintenance and quality control procedures.
• Follow specimen-handling, testing, reporting, and corrective-action procedures to support accurate patient care.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Histology, Chemical or Biological Science, Histology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, plus at least 1 year of histology experience where required.
• Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to embed both large and small specimens and work in a high-volume laboratory environment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills.
• Computer proficiency and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, pass a standardized color blindness test, and work overtime or other shifts when needed.

Nice to have

• At least 3 months of histology experience.
• At least 3 months of immunohistochemistry experience.
• Histology and/or ASCP certifications.
• Non-traditional education with applicable science credits meeting CLIA standards may substitute for the stated education requirements.
