Specimen Processing Technician (Medtech)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States; 100% onsite. Hours are 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with rotating weekends.

Salary: $43,400–$48,700 per year

What you will do

• Receive, process, store, transport, and distribute patient specimens while preserving specimen integrity.
• Enter specimens, cancellations, test orders, and results into the laboratory information system using barcode scanning or manual entry.
• Perform centrifugation, aliquoting, shipping, pre-analytic automation, and other preparation steps according to test requirements.
• Verify labeling and test accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and process add-on and reference-laboratory tests.
• Complete specimen delivery and pickup runs, including routine and STAT deliveries to partner laboratories.
• Respond to provider and caregiver inquiries, upload external laboratory results, review pending lists, and help train new team members.

Requirements

• High school diploma required; an associate or bachelor's degree in physical science is preferred.
• No prior healthcare or laboratory experience required.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and Department of Transportation specimen-shipping regulations.
• Understanding of specimen processing for different specimen types.
• Strong communication, customer service, computer, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and under pressure.
