Staff Software Engineer (Embedded Test Systems)

Location: Remote or onsite in Austin, Texas; Milford, Michigan; Mountain View, California; or Warren, Michigan, United States

Salary: $189,300–$290,700 per year, plus bonus potential

What you will do

• Lead the modernization of a large-scale embedded software test system across multiple engineering teams.
• Define architecture and roadmaps for standardized test execution, configuration and variation management, traceability, quality gates, regression selection, and results reporting.
• Build fully automated, headless testing across virtual and physical environments to support multiple full-suite executions per day.
• Establish change-impact analysis and risk-based regression strategies using Gears, Pure Variants, or equivalent tools.
• Standardize test-result schemas, metadata, diagnostics, and artifacts for storage and analytics in Databricks.
• Develop APIs and integrations connecting test execution, test management, issue tracking, failure triage, diagnostics, and CI/CD pipelines.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 10 or more years of experience validating software systems and leading architecture across organizations.
• Strong knowledge of real-time software architecture and experience shipping high-quality safety-critical products.
• Experience architecting large-scale CI/CD, embedded test automation, and build-to-test pipelines.
• Expertise in variation management, configuration comparison, change-impact analysis, and risk-based regression testing.
• Proficiency with embedded systems, Linux, Git, Python, Bash, Robot Framework, containers, infrastructure as code, Databricks, analytics, and API development.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, AI, or a related field.
• Experience with automotive software, safety-related toolchains, or GM engineering platforms.
• Experience building AI assistants, coding agents, knowledge systems, vector search, ranking, workflow orchestration, or code intelligence platforms.
• Experience evaluating AI quality in production using measurable outcomes such as acceptance rate, time saved, precision and recall, hallucination reduction, or workflow completion rate.
