Sr SDET – Firmware Automation

Location: Boston, MA or Mountain View, CA, with a flexible hybrid workplace model

Base salary: $178,000–$225,000 USD per year. Total compensation also includes equity and other rewards.

What you will do

• Own the architecture and roadmap of firmware test automation frameworks across products, hardware targets, sites, and engineering teams.
• Design production-quality automation for firmware features and new photonic hardware.
• Build and operate hardware-in-the-loop infrastructure, including fixtures, device farms, power and reset control, instrument integrations, and CI orchestration.
• Integrate firmware testing into CI/CD so changes are built, flashed, tested on physical hardware, and reported automatically.
• Build telemetry and log pipelines, track framework reliability and flaky tests, and debug failures across firmware, boards, instruments, fixtures, and test code.
• Partner with firmware and systems engineers on design reviews, diagnostics, monitoring architecture, documentation, and test strategy.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software development experience, primarily with embedded products, test frameworks, and infrastructure.
• Experience architecting and building an automation framework or HIL system from scratch and bringing it into daily use.
• Strong Python skills, including fixture and abstraction layers, hardware drivers, and plugin or configuration architectures.
• Working fluency in embedded C/C++ for reading firmware drivers or state machines and writing edge-case tests.
• Experience owning CI/CD pipelines that test physical hardware, including runner health, hardware allocation, and recovery.
• BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with optical transceivers, photonic systems, or precision analog and mixed-signal hardware.
• Familiarity with CMIS, OpenBMC, DMTF/Redfish, Zephyr, FreeRTOS, Twister, ztest, Renode, or QEMU.
• Experience with Pytest, optical and electrical test equipment, startup environments, or AI-assisted tools for test generation, triage, and analytics.
• PhD, or MS with 8+ years of embedded test automation or firmware development.
