TL;DR
Industrial Engineer, Mechanical Assembly (Manufacturing Systems): Designing and scaling manufacturing systems for mechanical assemblies, including actuators, mechanisms, and structural sub-assemblies, with an accent on capacity modeling, line balancing, and production metrics. Focus on optimizing factory layouts, establishing standard work, solving throughput and quality bottlenecks, and supporting the transition from prototype builds to high-rate production.

Location: Torrance, California, United States; onsite role. Must be willing to travel up to 30% and work extended hours or weekends as needed.

What you will do

  • Model production capacity and takt time for mechanical assembly lines to guide staffing, equipment, and layout decisions.
  • Develop process flow diagrams, value stream maps, and factory layouts that improve material flow and eliminate non-value-added work.
  • Conduct time studies and line-balancing analyses to establish standard work and identify bottlenecks.
  • Partner with design engineering on DFM/DFA feedback and support product transitions from prototype to high-rate production.
  • Build production earned value, OEE, throughput, quality, yield, and cost metrics; use data for root-cause investigations.
  • Lead capacity studies and PFMEAs, define process controls and inspection requirements, and support make/buy and automation investment decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering or a related field such as manufacturing, mechanical, or systems engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or experimental environment with exposure to process or capacity analysis.
  • Experience or knowledge of capacity modeling, line balancing, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, APQP, Control Plans, DFMEA, PFMEA, and Significant/Critical Characteristics.
  • Experience building dashboards or lightweight data pipelines using tools such as Excel, SQL, Python, or Tableau.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, cross-functional collaboration abilities, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to lift more than 50 pounds. Access to export-controlled information may require compliance with applicable U.S. Government eligibility, authorization, citizenship, or security-clearance requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with discrete-event simulation, automation, robotics, or flexible manufacturing systems.
  • Experience in hardware development and transitions from low-rate to high-rate production.
  • Familiarity with Confluence and JIRA.
