Engineering Manager, Okta Access Gateway

Salary: CAD 168,000–231,000 annual base salary for candidates located in Canada

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and grow an engineering team while supporting career development, performance goals, and inclusive collaboration.
• Own end-to-end delivery of product roadmap initiatives, balancing feature velocity, technical debt, quality, and predictable agile execution.
• Drive operational excellence for customer-deployed gateway appliances, including security standards, high availability, and performance benchmarking.
• Partner with Product Management, Architecture, Security, Quality, and UX teams on technical roadmaps, requirements, and architectural decisions.
• Guide modernization of gateway capabilities through containerization, deployment automation, and integration with the Okta Identity Cloud.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of formal software engineering management experience, or 4+ years as a hands-on Lead or Staff Engineer delivering complex multi-engineer projects.
• At least 8 years of software engineering experience with enterprise-scale distributed systems or infrastructure products.
• Strong server-side development background with Java and Spring Boot, Go, or C/C++, plus knowledge of concurrency, caching, high throughput, and asynchronous processing.
• Solid understanding of network architecture, TLS/SSL, reverse proxies and gateways, HTTP headers, DNS, and AWS, Azure, or GCP environments.
• Experience with agile delivery, CI/CD automation pipelines, cross-functional dependencies, and distributed teams.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for explaining complex technical trade-offs to technical and executive stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of IAM and authentication protocols including SAML 2.0, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, Kerberos/IWA, Header-Based Authentication, and FIDO2/WebAuthn.
• Experience with reverse proxies such as NGINX, Envoy, or HAProxy, API gateways, or Linux-based virtual appliances and containers.
• Experience with Zero Trust Network Access or enterprise integrations involving Oracle, SAP, IBM, or Microsoft.
• Experience scaling engineering teams in hybrid or distributed models.
