Director, Accounting (Insurance)

Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States

Salary: $153,000–$185,000 annually, plus potential annual bonus.

What you will do

• Establish and lead an operational accounting center of excellence focused on consistent execution, governance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee cash activity, suspense accounting, reconciliation quality, open-item aging, exposure monitoring, and related operational accounting processes.
• Identify control weaknesses, process breakdowns, root causes, and remediation opportunities from reconciliation and suspense accounting results.
• Partner with Operations, Finance, Risk, Internal Controls, and other stakeholders to resolve accounting matters and align processes with enterprise standards.
• Develop financial reports and complex models for forecasting, trending, and results analysis while applying technical accounting concepts across multiple accounting bases.
• Lead and develop management staff, set departmental direction, manage the budget, and align team priorities with risk reduction and business goals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
• Generally 12+ years of experience, including insurance accounting experience and a strong background in insurance, financial services, or investment management.
• Experience leading suspense cleanup, reconciliation improvement, aging reduction, exposure management, or operational accounting remediation initiatives.
• Demonstrated management and leadership experience, including the ability to lead a large employee group.
• Extensive knowledge of applicable accounting and business areas, with strong communication, organizational, prioritization, and project management skills.
• Effective judgment, decision-making skills, and the ability to anticipate future needs and challenges.
