Scientist / Senior Scientist, Membrane Biochemistry

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States; position based at the Bay Area campus

Salary: $136,300–$174,700 for Scientist I, $156,800–$201,000 for Scientist II, and $172,400–$221,000 for Senior Scientist I, depending on skills, experience, and location.

What you will do

• Advance scientific programs on brain aging and neurodegeneration using lipid and protein biochemistry.
• Design expression constructs and perform recombinant mammalian cell culture for membrane and membrane-associated protein purification.
• Develop workflows for chromatography purification, membrane reconstitution, liposome or nanodisc incorporation, and cryo-EM sample vitrification.
• Evaluate protein purity, stability, hydrodynamic radius, binding kinetics, oligomerization, and other biophysical properties.
• Develop biochemical activity assays, establish standard operating procedures, and document experimental work.
• Coordinate with contract research organizations for material generation and analysis.

Requirements

• PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or a related field.
• Expertise in membrane and lipid biology, including purification and structural characterization of transmembrane or peripheral membrane-binding proteins.
• Experience with quantitative binding biophysics using BLI, SPR, or ITC, including kinetic and affinity analysis.
• Experience assessing protein purity, mass, or stability using methods such as mass photometry, SEC-MALS, DLS, analytical SEC, or DSF.
• Experience with membrane or lipid-associated protein reconstitution and cryo-EM sample preparation and data analysis.
• Strong communication, collaboration, experimental rigor, troubleshooting, prioritization, and documentation skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI-assisted protein design pipelines.
• Immunoassay development using ECL/MSD or ELISA.
• Bioconjugation or synthetic chemistry for lipid, glycan, or fluorophore probes.
• Mass spectrometry, NMR, or X-ray crystallography for lipid-protein interaction studies.
