TL;DR
Senior Hardware Engineer (Physical AI): Developing sensor systems, PCBs, mechanical housings, and embedded integrations for self-driving industrial factories with an accent on rapid R&D, field prototyping, and industrial deployment. Focus on designing low-noise analog sensor systems, integrating sensors with Zephyr RTOS, analyzing test data, and solving electromechanical challenges in demanding environments.

Location: Somerville, Massachusetts, United States; hybrid workplace.

Company

Laminar builds self-driving factory systems that combine inline sensors, physics- and chemistry-grounded AI models, and real-time process control software to improve industrial productivity and sustainability.

What you will do

  • Design and prototype PCBs for commercial and custom sensors using KiCad, SolidWorks, and simulation tools such as PSpice.
  • Design mechanical housings for sensor systems deployed in demanding industrial environments.
  • Develop test strategies, collect and analyze sensor performance data, and present results in technical reviews.
  • Lead internal system-design efforts focused on rapid evaluation, prototyping, and strong ownership.
  • Integrate sensors with established testing platforms using Zephyr RTOS.
  • Provide design, assembly, debugging, and electromechanical development support across multiple hardware projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in electronics design, mechanical design, and data analysis.
  • Experience with PCB SMD and THT soldering, rework, troubleshooting, oscilloscopes, digital signal analysis, switch-mode power supplies, and EMI troubleshooting.
  • PCB design experience with advanced microcontrollers, low-noise analog sensor systems, industrial communications protocols, and high-density layouts.
  • Product development experience covering new-product bring-up and R&D, plus embedded-systems coding experience, preferably with Zephyr RTOS or a similar platform.
  • Experience designing CNC-machined housings, watertight seals, and industrial product interfaces, together with a generalist electromechanical mindset.
  • Clear, efficient communication and the ability to balance multiple projects and changing priorities.

Nice to have

  • Significant experience across both electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Full product-development lifecycle experience from concept through volume production and sunset.
  • Experience with PCB contract manufacturers, machine shops, and design-for-manufacturing practices.
  • Mechanical design experience for difficult environments, including ATEX zones or automotive applications.
  • RF experience, particularly antenna design, tuning, or RF spectroscopy.

Culture & Benefits

  • Autonomous, hands-on environment with direct impact on product development and company culture.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, transportation, and health and wellness benefits.
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching, equity, competitive salary, and bonus opportunities.
  • Flexible time off, 12 company-paid holidays, and a conference and learning budget.
  • Access to Greentown Labs and its cleantech startup network.

Hiring process

  • Interviews include discussion of previous hardware and product-development projects.
  • The process encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds who may not meet every listed requirement.
