Mechanical Engineer (AI Hardware)

Location: Santa Clara, United States; hybrid

Salary: $175,000–$265,000 per year, plus equity and bonus opportunities.

What you will do

• Lead rack-scale mechanical design for AI inference hardware in compliance with OCP specifications.
• Design and validate chassis systems, sheet metal enclosures, cooling architectures, and high-power connections.
• Own mechanical products from concept and validation through NPI, production ramp, and mass production.
• Run reliability testing, including shock, vibration, and thermal cycling, and use 3D modeling, FEA, and tolerance analysis to validate manufacturability.
• Partner with suppliers, ODMs, contract manufacturers, and JDMs on custom mechanical and thermal components and production support.
• Integrate liquid-cooled rack systems, including cold plates, manifolds, CDU interfaces, and facility water connections, and resolve production quality issues through root-cause analysis.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years of industry experience in mechanical design, simulation, and validation for IT hardware, including technical leadership of rack-scale programs.
• Hands-on experience with OCP specifications, rack-scale systems, chassis and sheet metal design, DFM, and high-volume manufacturing.
• Experience conducting and interpreting shock and vibration testing and taking designs from concept through validation to mass production.
• Proficiency with CAD and FEA, plus expertise in GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and materials selection.
• Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, supplier collaboration, and cross-functional engineering skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• 15+ years of industry experience in mechanical design, simulation, and validation for IT hardware.
• Experience with data center hardware or high-performance computing systems.
• Familiarity with liquid-cooled rack architectures and direct cold plate or manifold design experience.
• Expertise in reliability testing, failure analysis, and thermal stress modeling.
