TL;DR
Optical Engineer (Quantum Computing): Designing and assembling opto-mechanical subsystems for optically trapped neutral-atom quantum computers with an accent on laser distribution, high-numerical-aperture imaging, optical cavities, and precision alignment. Focus on performing tolerance and stray-light analysis, developing alignment procedures, and characterizing optical subsystem performance.

Location: On-site in Boulder, Colorado, five days per week

Base salary: $120,000–$150,000 per year, plus annual bonus and equity.

What you will do

  • Design opto-mechanical subsystems for laser distribution, high-numerical-aperture microscope imaging, and optical cavities.
  • Analyze competing engineering requirements and recommend suitable design solutions.
  • Create optical system and subsystem designs and specifications from component to system level.
  • Perform tolerance and stray-light analysis to evaluate designs.
  • Develop alignment procedures and assist with hands-on assembly and precision alignment.
  • Characterize optical subsystem performance and collaborate with mechanical engineers and physicists.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of optical design experience and 2+ years of hands-on optics assembly experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience with Fourier optics, flat-field relay optical systems, telecentric imaging, and high-numerical-aperture imaging systems.
  • Experience with Zemax, FRED, or equivalent ray-tracing software.
  • Experience with Onshape, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Ability to work on-site in Boulder five days per week and lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
