What you will do

  • Lead the design, development, integration, verification, and validation of optical and optical-sensing subsystems for biomedical and diagnostic instruments.
  • Translate system and product requirements into optical subsystem requirements, architectures, interfaces, and design documentation.
  • Design, model, prototype, characterize, and optimize optical paths, illumination and detection systems, imaging systems, spectroscopic approaches, and opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Plan and execute optical testing, tolerance evaluations, Design of Experiments, verification protocols, and performance investigations.
  • Support feasibility studies, prototype development, design transfer, production, sustaining engineering, and manufacturing control development.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship while collaborating with mechanical, electrical, software, fluidic, analytical, quality, manufacturing, vendor, and program teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 8 years of experience developing optical subsystems for instrumentation, sensors, biomedical systems, diagnostic devices, or medical devices.
  • Hands-on experience with optical path design, illumination and detection, imaging or spectroscopy, prototyping, optical alignment, characterization, and performance testing.
  • Experience integrating optical subsystems with mechanical, electrical, software, fluidic, analytical, manufacturing, and quality interfaces.
  • Experience with engineering verification, design reviews, failure mode and effects analyses, technical investigations, and regulated product development.
  • Working knowledge of optical design, ray tracing, modeling, data analysis, and tools such as Zemax, TracePro, Python, LabVIEW, SolidWorks, or ANSYS; ability to work onsite in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering, physics, or biomedical discipline.
  • Experience with medical device design controls, design transfer, production support, and sustaining engineering.
  • Knowledge of biomedical sensing applications such as blood-gas measurement, hemolysis detection, CO-Oximetry, fluorescence imaging, immunoassay, or hematology.
  • Experience with opto-mechanical design, tolerance analysis, engineering polymers, disposable sensors, microfluidics, thermal or structural analysis, or precision mechanisms.

Culture & Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Competitive 401(k) company match, bonus program, generous paid time off, and paid holidays.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
  • Onsite work with flexible work arrangements available within the company.
