Optics Engineer I, Contractor (Quantum Computing) (Optical Systems): Building, aligning, characterizing, and testing high-precision optical systems for quantum computers with an accent on laser characterization, optical metrology, and opto-mechanical integration. Focus on troubleshooting optical and optoelectronic systems, analyzing experimental and production data, and preparing designs and documentation for manufacturing readiness.

Location: On-site in Broomfield, Colorado, United States. Candidates must be U.S. persons, such as U.S. citizens, permanent residents or green card holders, or individuals granted asylum or refugee status. Candidates must not be nationals of China or Russia unless they are also U.S. citizens.

Salary: $80,000–$108,000 annually.

What you will do

  • Design, build, assemble, align, characterize, and validate high-precision optical subassemblies and systems.
  • Perform optical characterization and metrology, measuring optical power, phase, frequency, polarization, stability, and frequency noise.
  • Troubleshoot optical and optoelectronic systems and implement corrective actions for performance and manufacturing readiness.
  • Collect, analyze, graph, interpret, and present experimental and production data.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, test reports, design records, and production-related documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in optics, photonics, physics, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • 0–2 years of experience in a relevant technical field.
  • U.S. person status is required due to contractual requirements.
  • Applicants must not be nationals of China or Russia unless they are also U.S. citizens.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, presentation, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities in a research and manufacturing environment.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with optical and laser system design, integration, alignment, characterization, and testing.
  • Knowledge of lasers, fiber-optic components, acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators, spectrum analyzers, phase-noise analyzers, frequency counters, and related equipment.
  • Experience with free-space and fiber-coupled systems, fiber fusion splicing, fiber handling, and precision opto-mechanical assembly.
  • Experience with Zemax, SolidWorks, or equivalent optical design and mechanical CAD tools.
  • Experience creating work instructions, SOPs, test plans, engineering change documentation, and configuration management records.
