TL;DR
Senior Counsel - Litigation & Product (Autonomous Vehicles): Managing litigation, building litigation-readiness infrastructure, and advising Engineering, Product, and Safety & Regulatory teams as an autonomous trucking platform moves toward commercial deployment with an accent on product liability, incident response, and AV regulatory matters. Focus on developing driver-out operational protocols, supporting NHTSA and FMCSA reporting, and translating complex transportation safety requirements into practical legal guidance.

Location: Fully remote for candidates based anywhere in the U.S. Occasional travel to Blacksburg, VA; Fort Worth, TX; and Ann Arbor, MI is expected at approximately 5–10% of the time. Occasional international travel, including Montreal, may occur, and the ability to obtain a passport is required.

Salary: $221,900–$266,300 USD annually, plus potential bonus and stock options.

Develops software for Level 4 autonomous trucks and works with truck-manufacturer partners to commercialize autonomous driving technology.

What you will do

  • Own the litigation docket, including outside counsel, budgets, strategy, resolution, reporting, and panel management.
  • Build and operate litigation-readiness infrastructure, including legal holds, response playbooks, evidence preservation, and driver-out operational protocols.
  • Lead cross-functional incident response with Safety & Regulatory, Engineering, Communications, and other stakeholders.
  • Advise Product, Engineering, and Safety & Regulatory teams on product liability, safety documentation, product releases, recalls, and commercial launch risks.
  • Support NHTSA and FMCSA reporting, including crash, defect, recall, and Early Warning Reporting requirements.
  • Translate evolving AV regulations into practical guidance and contribute to legal-team process improvements and knowledge management.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 7+ years of legal experience with meaningful exposure to litigation management, product liability, or related practice areas.
  • Experience managing litigation and outside counsel, including budgets, strategy, and resolution.
  • Experience building or maintaining litigation-readiness infrastructure, such as legal-hold programs and incident-response protocols.
  • Strong judgment, communication, collaboration, and ability to explain complex legal issues to executives, engineers, and other non-lawyers.
  • Availability for short-notice response, including occasional evenings and weekends, during incidents or urgent matters.

Nice to have

  • In-house experience at a technology company, automotive OEM, Tier 1 automotive supplier, or advanced mobility company.
  • Product-liability experience with hardware-software systems in regulated, safety-critical industries.
  • Familiarity with NHTSA, FMCSA, or other federal transportation safety frameworks.
  • Experience working with a Government Affairs function on regulatory matters.
