Risk Engineer (Fintech)

Location: San Francisco, CA; 5 days a week in office

Salary: $190,000–$295,000 annual base salary, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

• Build the risk decisioning layer for card authorization and mobile wallet provisioning.
• Move fraud logic from vendor dashboards into a testable control plane with versioned rules, shadow mode, staged rollouts, and kill switches.
• Develop real-time detection and alerting for velocity, cross-provisioning, and device signals, including lockdown capabilities during active attacks.
• Evaluate servicing changes such as address, phone, email, and card reship requests.
• Build internal tooling used daily by fraud analysts.
• Own the architecture and work directly with Risk and Fraud Operations teams.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building production backend systems.
• Meaningful experience in fraud, payments risk, or trust and safety engineering.
• Hands-on experience building decisioning services, rules engines, real-time scoring, or step-up orchestration.
• Strong distributed systems and API fundamentals in a modern backend language, primarily Java; Python is used for data work.
• Ability to assess blast radius, safely disable controls, monitor incidents, and respond steadily under pressure.
• Must work onsite in the San Francisco office five days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience with card issuing, authorization-time decisioning, tokenization, wallet provisioning, disputes, or PCI.
• Experience with account takeover prevention, step-up authentication, OTP, SIM swap detection, phishing resistance, device fingerprinting, passkeys, or identity verification.
• Experience at a risk or identity vendor such as Sardine, Sift, Unit21, Feedzai, Alloy, or Persona.
