Lead Backup & Recovery Engineer

Location: Fully remote, based anywhere in the United States

Salary: $6,805.95–$11,921.25 per month; bonus or incentive plan eligible.

What you will do

• Own enterprise data protection strategy and architecture across on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments.
• Define backup, retention, recovery, lifecycle, RPO/RTO, governance, compliance, and service-level standards.
• Design resilient, ransomware-resistant solutions using immutable, air-gapped, and isolated recovery capabilities.
• Lead platform evaluation, vendor selection, migrations, upgrades, recovery testing, and disaster recovery exercises.
• Partner with infrastructure, cloud, security, storage, database, and application teams on protection requirements.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, architecture reviews, automation direction, and escalation support.

Requirements

• 8+ years of hands-on enterprise backup and recovery engineering experience, including lead, principal, or architect-level work.
• Experience leading end-to-end enterprise backup migrations with cutover and validation accountability.
• Deep knowledge of disaster recovery, RTO/RPO design, recovery testing, immutable and air-gapped architectures, and ransomware resilience.
• Experience with cloud backup and storage tiering in AWS, Azure, OCI, or GCP, including object storage, archive tiers, lifecycle policies, and cost implications.
• Working knowledge of SAN, NAS, object storage, snapshots, replication, ITIL, and formal change management.
• Ability to communicate technical risk and defend architecture decisions to senior management, steering committees, audit, and risk functions.

Nice to have

• Experience with multiple enterprise backup platforms and complex or post-acquisition environments.
• Knowledge of Oracle, SQL Server, SAP, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, containerized workloads, SaaS, and Microsoft 365 protection.
• Proficiency with scripting, automation, and infrastructure-as-code methodologies.
• Vendor, cloud, or ITIL certifications and experience with budgeting, licensing, negotiations, and cost optimization.
