Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace/Defense)

Location: Rosslyn, VA, United States; active in-office and field-oriented role with travel and customer-site deployments.

Salary: Mid-level $110,000–$150,000 annually; Senior-level $130,000–$180,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design and develop ruggedized electronic enclosures and custom mechanical installation kits using engineering analysis and first-principles physics.
• Own CAD modeling, PLM, production drawings, GD&T, and assembly validation for ruggedized mechanical assemblies.
• Partner with vendors and suppliers on tooling, procurement, bills of materials, design revisions, manufacturing, and field deployment.
• Travel to customer sites to lead mechanical fit checks, installations, integration testing, and system verification.
• Prototype, test, and validate designs against structural, thermal, environmental, and integration requirements.
• Convert field findings into design improvements that address interface, fitment, environmental, and manufacturability issues.

Requirements

• 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience in rugged electrical enclosures, brackets, installation kits, or hands-on hardware integration; 7+ years for Senior level.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and PLM tools, including SolidWorks, Siemens NX, and Teamcenter, plus detailed design, drafting, GD&T, and assembly validation.
• Strong fundamentals in first-principles physics, FEA, sheet metal fabrication, and advanced manufacturing methods.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical prototyping, assembly, integration, and testing in regulated environments using MIL-STD-810 and DO-160 standards.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Active U.S. Secret security clearance or the ability and willingness to obtain one; willingness to travel as needed.

Nice to have

• System-level electromechanical integration experience for defense or aerospace platforms, including cable routing, thermal management, structural load paths, and mounting constraints.
• Vendor surveys, supplier-change evaluation, and collaboration with supply chain and manufacturing teams.
• Experience in an AS9100-certified environment and familiarity with IPC standards.
