Staff Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: El Segundo, California, or Tucson, Arizona, United States. The El Segundo position requires regular on-site work. The Tucson position may be primarily remote, but residence within reasonable commuting distance of Tucson and on-site availability as needed are required.

Salary: $167,000–$209,000 annual base compensation, excluding bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and integrate airframes, control surfaces, structures, mechanisms, enclosures, payload hardware, avionics hardware, and support equipment.
• Own mechanical design for defined subsystems, product areas, and major assemblies from concept through production support.
• Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, production drawings with GD&T, installation documentation, and interface control documents.
• Perform trade studies, structural and thermal analyses, hand calculations, requirements analysis, and design verification.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, RF, power, manufacturing, systems engineering, suppliers, customers, and platform providers to resolve integration challenges.
• Support prototype fabrication, system integration, qualification, flight testing, production transition, configuration control, fielding, and sustainment; mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 7+ years of progressively responsible experience designing and integrating airframes, flight vehicles, structural assemblies, or related aerospace hardware.
• Experience designing airframes, control surfaces, and structural assemblies subject to vibration, shock, thermal, aerodynamic, and other environmental requirements.
• Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, or equivalent mechanical CAD tools, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, and configuration-controlled documentation.
• Understanding of structural load paths, joints, fasteners, inserts, bearings, hinges, bonded joints, metallic and composite structures, and hand calculations or FEA.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with composite materials, bonded joints, composite manufacturing, and airframe manufacturing processes.
• Experience with advanced structural analysis using ANSYS, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, COMSOL, or similar tools.
• Experience supporting structural or flight testing, including instrumentation, strain-gage testing, environmental qualification, or flight-test range operations.
• Experience integrating deployment mechanisms, avionics, sensors, payloads, propulsion systems, wire harnesses, or connectors into flight vehicles.
