Principal Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace/Defense)

Location: El Segundo, California, United States; full-time, on-site

Salary: $233,000–$292,000 annual base compensation, excluding bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the mechanical design, packaging, integration, and qualification of ruggedized electronic hardware, sensor systems, avionics, structures, mechanisms, and support equipment.
• Serve as the final mechanical technical authority for major programs and define mechanical architectures, interfaces, and design approaches.
• Create and maintain CAD models, complex assemblies, production drawings, installation documentation, and interface control documents.
• Perform or guide structural and thermal analyses, design verification, prototyping, and environmental qualification activities.
• Work with engineering, manufacturing, customers, suppliers, and platform providers to resolve cross-disciplinary technical challenges and support production transition.
• Mentor engineers and designers while establishing engineering methods, standards, processes, and best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 12+ years of experience designing and integrating electronic hardware for aerospace, defense, or similar applications.
• Expert proficiency with mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks and experience producing production-ready drawings.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical interfaces, tolerancing, alignment, installation practices, GD&T, tolerance analysis, configuration control, and ICDs.
• Experience with ruggedized hardware, environmental qualification, military and aerospace connectors, and standards including MIL-STD-810.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience as a mechanical technical authority, with system requirements allocation and architecture trade studies.
• Experience with thermal cycling, vibration, shock, mechanisms, actuation systems, structures, thermal management, cable routing, and electromechanical integration.
• Experience with prototyping, additive manufacturing, CNC machining, fabrication, assembly, and production transition.
• Experience with FEA or multiphysics tools such as NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, or COMSOL.
