TL;DR
Staff Materials Engineer - Metallurgical Engineering (Fusion): Developing and qualifying metals, alloys, material specifications, and manufacturing processes for SPARC and future ARC fusion power systems with an accent on manufacturability, material performance, and production scalability. Focus on translating component requirements into validated material properties, leading alloy development, and solving materials challenges involving cryogenic loads, high temperatures, neutron fluxes, and high magnetic fields.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global develops fusion power systems, including the SPARC net-energy tokamak and the future ARC fusion power plant.

What you will do

  • Translate component and system requirements and failure modes into measurable material property requirements and suitable test methods.
  • Select materials and manufacturing processes for scalable, cost-conscious production of structures and systems operating under demanding conditions.
  • Interpret international materials standards and author specifications for fusion-specific applications.
  • Lead materials development projects when commercially available materials do not meet application requirements.
  • Collaborate with design, supply chain, manufacturing, vendors, and suppliers to qualify materials and processing methods.
  • Support production root cause analyses, corrective actions, and engineering use of materials property data.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree with postgraduate experience in metallurgy, materials science, or a related field; a bachelor’s degree may be considered based on experience and qualifications.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in R&D and production environments.
  • Experience with large-scale metal production processes such as casting, forging, rolling, or drawing, and/or large-scale joining processes.
  • Strong understanding of process–structure–properties–performance relationships and experience scaling alloy development from R&D to full-scale products.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering, scientific, technical, vendor, and supplier teams.
  • Ability to work on-site in Devens, Massachusetts, comply with U.S. export control laws, and occasionally work nights, weekends, or on-call shifts; travel is less than 10%.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of materials behavior in cryogenic and high-temperature applications and in nuclear or plasma environments.
  • Experience delivering new alloys or materials processes from design through at-scale implementation.
  • Experience authoring materials standards and specifications.
  • Experience communicating materials development results and performance metrics to technical and executive leadership.

Culture & Benefits

  • Safety-focused work environment involving industrial hazards such as heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • Company-wide holidays, flexible vacation days, sick days, and parental leave.
  • Health, dental, vision insurance, and a 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Professional growth opportunities and team-building activities.
