TL;DR
Senior Materials & Process Engineer (Energetic Materials): Developing characterization, qualification, and failure-analysis methods for solid rocket motor propellants and related polymeric material systems with an accent on mechanical, viscoelastic, thermal, and environmental behavior. Focus on establishing material specifications and acceptance criteria, investigating root causes of material and process failures, and translating test results into propulsion and manufacturing requirements.

Location: Torrance, California or Rio Rancho, New Mexico, United States. U.S. work authorization and ITAR eligibility are required. Access to classified information or restricted U.S. Government sites may require additional security clearance, government authorization, citizenship, or other eligibility requirements.

What you will do

  • Lead characterization of solid rocket motor propellants and related polymeric material systems using mechanical testing, DMA, rheometry, DSC/TGA, microscopy, and other techniques.
  • Develop test methods covering temperature, strain rate, aging, processing conditions, and operational environments.
  • Develop and execute qualification and acceptance testing for raw materials and cast propellant.
  • Lead failure analysis and root-cause investigations for material performance, processing, and manufacturing defects.
  • Maintain material specifications, process controls, test plans, and acceptance criteria.
  • Partner with Propulsion and Manufacturing Engineering on material selection, processing requirements, design inputs, and manufacturing scale-up.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, materials engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience with polymer characterization, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience with propellant characterization, including mechanical, impact, static, burn-rate, and impulse testing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Authorization to work in the United States and compliance with ITAR eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to comply with applicable material handling, testing, safety, export-control, and government authorization requirements.
