Staff Mechanical Engineer - Remote Maintenance (Fusion Energy)

Location: On-site in Devens, Massachusetts, United States. Occasional travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work may be required; travel is expected up to 15%.

Salary: $130,000–$200,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the development and strategic execution of ARC’s Remote Maintenance System.
• Guide the conceptual design of the ARC fusion power plant and collaborate with tokamak and plant engineering teams.
• Design radiation-hardened remote handling equipment using robotics, custom hardware, and remotely operated heavy-lift equipment.
• Perform maintenance assessments and multidisciplinary trade studies covering physics, neutronics, mechanical systems, thermo-fluids, electrical systems, materials, manufacturing, and techno-economics.
• Lead R&D campaigns, manage external robotics and remote-handling partners, and evaluate established and emerging technologies.
• Establish remote-maintenance design principles and mentor junior and peer engineers while leading multidisciplinary teams and projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in structural, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
• At least 10 years of mechanical engineering experience designing, fabricating, testing, operating, integrating, and commissioning complex mechanical structures.
• At least 10 years of technical experience designing remote handling equipment using robotics or remotely operated precision mechanical structures.
• Experience leading R&D campaigns for remote welding, cutting, inspection, bolting, manipulation, alignment, sensing, mechatronics, radiation-hardened systems, or cleanliness technologies.
• Expertise in actuation, guidance mechanisms, sensing, structural mechanisms, hand calculations, and finite element analysis; Ansys and NX are preferred.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, communicate complex concepts clearly, build consensus, and work safely around industrial hazards including high voltage, cryogenics, strong magnets, fumes, and lead.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in structural, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
• Experience with radiation-hardened equipment, applied robotics, rescue or decommissioning equipment, remotely operated facility layouts, activated waste handling, or ultra-high-vacuum environments.
• Knowledge of fault-tree analysis, controls, fluid systems, fabrication, welding, machining, and engineering materials.
• Experience driving conceptual design of complex systems independently and using data to make decisions in ambiguous environments.
