HR Generalist

Location: Full-time, Monday–Friday in-office presence in Chicago, IL, or Atlanta, GA, with travel to operational locations as needed.

Salary: $85,000–$95,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Serve as the primary resource for employee relations, including investigations, disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, and manager coaching.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and support labor relations in a unionized workforce.
• Administer compensation programs, job evaluations, salary benchmarking, job classifications, merit reviews, and union pay scales.
• Manage performance cycles, progressive discipline, employee leave programs, unemployment claims, and state agency responses.
• Maintain accurate employee data in the HRIS and manage pre-employment checks, I-9 verification, orientations, and onboarding.
• Support employees and managers across high-volume, multi-location transportation operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
• At least 5 years of progressive HR Generalist experience across the listed functional areas.
• Direct experience with a unionized workforce, including collective bargaining agreements, grievance procedures, and labor law.
• Experience with HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office Suite, plus a track record of improving HR processes and employee experience.
• Experience in intercity bus transportation, passenger rail, transit authorities, or comparable high-volume transportation operations.
• Experience supporting DOT-regulated employees and familiarity with FMCSA requirements. Full-time in-office presence in Chicago or Atlanta and travel to operational locations are required.

Nice to have

• PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
• Experience supporting multiple sites or geographically dispersed employee populations.
